The economy may have been as gloomy as the weather but in Britain’s bedrooms, temperatures have soared!  Figures reveal recession-hit Brits turned to saucy underwear to perk them up.

Victoria Sullivan, set up her online lingerie business 12 months ago.  Since having her website revamped six months ago she has gone from having no online sales – to ringing up thousands of pounds a week.

She says: "When there’s a credit crunch, shoppers tend to make small, often unconscious, decisions in their spending habits."  Three months ago her online success led to Victoria opening a boutique in Warwickshire.

She adds: "Being a new business means I can’t compare our current sales with anything in the past, but I am really pleased with the way things are going."

John Lewis reported a huge surge in sales of the bras and erotic lingerie firm, Agent Provocateur, reported an 8% rise, describing its trading period during the recession as "going from strength to strength".  It isn’t just the ladies who are boosting the underwear business. Debenhams reported that sales of Y-fronts increased 35% during the recession, outselling boxer shorts for the first time since the early 1990s, the last time when Britain was in a recession.  A store spokesman claimed Y-fronts provide wearers with a "greater sense of security" than their loose fitting counterparts, during tough times.
